My Firsts: A Journey Along the Danube

October 28, 2026 by Lynda Falcone

I haven’t read many travel blogs, and I certainly don’t consider myself a writer. But after returning from my first river cruise, I felt I wanted to share the story of a few very special “firsts.” This was my first river cruise, my first time travelling along the Danube, and my first trip as a journey leader with Craig Travel, and it turned out to be a wonderful adventure.

Our Journey Begins in Prague

Our journey began with three days in Prague before we joined our cruise in Passau. Prague was a wonderful introduction to the trip, with time to explore its beautiful architecture and historic streets, and hear about its fascinating history. It was also a reminder of one of the things I love most about travel: there is always something new to discover, even in places you may have seen in photographs many times before. From Prague, we travelled to Passau to meet our ship, the Amadeus Amara, and begin our journey along the Danube.

As we prepared for our cruise, the Danube’s unusually low water levels were something to keep in mind. Water levels can vary along the river, sometimes requiring adjustments to cruise itineraries. Fortunately, the Amadeus Amara is a modern luxury ship, designed with a shallow draft to help it navigate changing conditions. Even the swimming pool was drained to reduce the ship’s weight and help accommodate the river conditions.

Our cruise continued with a small adjustment to the itinerary. We docked about 50 km from Budapest, which meant missing the planned evening illumination cruise, but we still looked forward to discovering the city and enjoying the many experiences along the Danube.

Life on Board

This was my first experience with river cruising, and I quickly understood why people enjoy it so much. The Amadeus Amara was beautiful. Our cabins were comfortable and well designed, the service was excellent, and the food was fantastic. The crew also did a wonderful job accommodating the food allergies within our group, which made such a difference.

One of my favourite things about river cruising was simply watching the scenery go by. There was something very relaxing about sitting on the ship, enjoying a drink, and watching the countryside unfold along the river.

We were also incredibly lucky with the weather. Temperatures were generally in the low 20s — perfect for exploring. It was warm enough to be enjoyable but not so hot that walking tours became uncomfortable.

Discovering Vienna and Budapest

Our journey took us through some remarkable cities, including Vienna and Budapest. Both are renowned for their world-class architecture, and they certainly didn’t disappoint. Everywhere we looked, there were beautiful buildings, grand boulevards, historic landmarks, and reminders of the fascinating history that shaped these cities.

But it wasn’t just the architecture that stayed with me. We learned about the history and politics of the region, and I was particularly struck by some of the Holocaust memorials. They were powerful reminders of the human stories behind the history we were learning about.

Travel has a way of making history feel much more real. Seeing these places in person and hearing the stories behind them creates an emotional connection that is difficult to get from reading about them in a book.

In between the cities, there was the beautiful countryside — peaceful villages, rolling landscapes, and views along the Danube that I could simply sit and enjoy.

Travel Is About People

As beautiful as the destinations and the ship were, I think the greatest part of the journey was the people. Our group came from different parts of Ontario, with one traveller from Montreal, and we had a wonderful mix of ages and personalities. Everyone was well travelled, respectful of one another, and, most importantly, we all got along so well.

We celebrated a milestone birthday together, shared lots of laughs, and enjoyed plenty of time simply being together. There were card games, shuffleboard competitions, and even line dancing. One of our group members taught us how to line dance, and it became one of those unexpected memories that I know we will all remember.

These are the moments that don’t necessarily appear in an itinerary but often become the best memories of a trip.

Finding the Right Pace

Another thing I really enjoyed was the pace. There was enough included in the itinerary to keep us busy and give us opportunities to explore, but there was also flexibility. We could take part in a half-day tour and still have time afterwards to relax, explore on our own, or simply spend time together.

I think that balance is particularly appealing as we get older. Travel doesn’t have to mean rushing from one attraction to the next. Sometimes it’s just as enjoyable to sit and watch the world go by, have a leisurely lunch, wander through a city, or enjoy a conversation with someone you’ve just met.

My First Trip as a Journey Leader

There was another very special first for me — my first trip as a Journey Leader with Craig Travel. I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect going into the trip. There were certainly a lot of details to keep track of, and the low water levels added another element of uncertainty.

Having such a wonderful group made the experience incredibly rewarding. I learned a lot, I met some wonderful people, and I discovered that being a Journey Leader is about much more than keeping everyone on schedule. It’s about being there for your group, helping when needed, sharing the excitement, and sometimes simply making sure everyone is having a good time.

Looking back, I’m very grateful that my first experience was with this particular group.

Three Firsts and Wonderful Memories

When I think about this trip now, I don’t think I’ll remember just the places we visited or the beautiful ship. What I’ll remember most are the people. I’ll remember the laughter, the birthday celebration, the card games, shuffleboard, and line dancing. I’ll remember the beautiful scenery along the Danube, sitting on the ship watching the river go by, and discovering Prague, Vienna, and Budapest.

And I’ll remember the feeling of my firsts. My first river cruise. My first journey along the Danube. My first trip as a Craig Travel Journey Leader. Three firsts that gave me some wonderful memories.

Travel really is about meeting new people, experiencing new places, and making memories along the way. This trip reminded me of that once again. I came home with great memories, a new appreciation for river cruising, and one very strong feeling:

I can't wait to travel with my next group!
