The Story Behind the Castles of the Rhine

Few European landscapes capture the imagination quite like the Rhine Valley. Along the 65-kilometre Upper Middle Rhine Valley, around 40 castles and fortresses stand among historic towns, vineyards and steep hillsides.

Their concentration here is no coincidence. For centuries, the Rhine was an important route for trade and travel through Europe, and control of the river brought both power and wealth.

A River of Trade and Power

During the Middle Ages, different rulers controlled sections of the Rhine and built castles and fortifications in strategic locations. From above the river, they could defend their territories and protect important trade routes. Some also served as customs posts, allowing rulers to collect tolls from passing ships.

Wars and political changes eventually left many damaged or abandoned. Some remain as ruins, while others were later rebuilt or restored.

Today, these reminders of the past are part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its remarkable combination of history and landscape.

Experience the Rhine From the Water

During our Scenic Rhine & Rail journey, the Rhine Gorge unfolds around you. Castles, half-timbered villages and vineyard-covered hillsides come into view as you sail through this UNESCO-listed stretch of the river.

River cruising also gives you time to enjoy the journey itself. With seven nights aboard, you can unpack once and settle in, heading ashore for included excursions and returning to the ship to relax and watch the scenery pass by.

From the Rhine, the journey continues into Switzerland, with time in Zermatt and a ride aboard the Glacier Express adding a spectacular alpine finale.
