Northwest Passage: The Legendary Arctic Sea Route
Departure Date: August 29, 2027
Below are answers to some of the most common questions about the Northwest Passage Expedition.
Activity Level & Mobility
Q: I can’t walk long distances. Is this trip suitable for me?
A: This expedition is rated 4/5 on our challenge scale. Guests should have good mobility to get in and out of Zodiac boats and walk on uneven terrain. Shore excursions may include wet landings and walks of a few kilometres.
Quark Expeditions staff are present at the gangway and during every landing, whether wet or dry, to assist guests. You will never be expected to get in or out of a Zodiac on your own. A clear and practiced Zodiac procedure is followed, and the expedition team ensures each guest is steady and comfortable before stepping ashore. This video demonstrates this protocol very well.
Participation is always optional, and guests may remain on board if preferred.
Luggage & Packing
Q: How much luggage can I bring?
A: Typically one checked bag of 20–23 kg (44–50 lbs), depending on airline requirements. Final allowances will be confirmed with your travel documents. Laundry is available on board.
Q: What’s supplied onboard, and what should I bring from home?
A: You’ll be well outfitted for adventure. Quark Expeditions provides a complimentary parka to keep, insulated waterproof boots on loan for shore and Zodiac excursions, and walking poles available at each landing to provide added stability on uneven or icy terrain, ensuring you’re ready to step confidently onto the ice or rugged coastline. We recommend packing warm, layered clothing, waterproof pants and gloves, a cozy hat, and sturdy non-slip shoes for onboard use. Don’t forget sunglasses, any personal medications, and your camera with extra batteries to capture the wildlife and sweeping polar landscapes. A good pair of binoculars will bring distant glaciers and seabirds even closer.
Weather & Sea Conditions
Q: What’s the weather like?
A: High Arctic weather is highly variable. Temperatures can be near freezing, with possible rain, snow, wind, fog, or sunshine — sometimes all in one day. Layering is essential.
Q: What about seasickness?
A: Arctic waters can be rough. Bring your preferred seasickness medication or patches and begin them before boarding if needed.
Dining & Onboard Amenities
Q: Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
A: Yes. Please list dietary needs on your medical form after booking. The culinary team will do their best to accommodate. Kosher meals cannot be provided due to the small kitchen and risk of cross-contact.
Q: Are meals buffet or à la carte?
A: Here is what you can expect for meals:
· Breakfast and lunch are buffet style
· Dinners are always a la carte – 4 or 5 course meals with different options each night
· For those who are early risers or who wants a quick bite, there are always buffet options in the Bistro area
· Expect afternoon tea with snacks / small bites and cocktails with finger food after explorations and before evening recaps
· Alcohol is included during meals and at the bar
· Enjoy a great selection of coffee and amazing mocktail selection offered on board, all included!
Q: Is there Wi-Fi on board?
A: Yes, Wi-Fi is available, though connectivity may be limited due to the remote Arctic location.
Dietary Requirements
Q: I have dietary restrictions. Can they accommodate my needs?
A: Yes. Most dietary needs, including lactose intolerance, gluten-free, vegetarian or other special diets, can usually be accommodated. Vegetarian options are always available. Please inform your travel advisor at least 60 days before departure. While every effort is made to avoid cross-contamination, it cannot be fully guaranteed. Many Icelandic hotel breakfasts, often buffet-style, include naturally gluten-free items such as eggs, cheese, skyr (yogurt), fresh produce and meats. Dedicated gluten-free bread or crispbread can be requested in advance.
Group & Booking Information
Q: What is the Craig Travel group size?
A: We aim for a maximum of 24 Craig Travel guests. The full expedition ship may carry up to approximately 200 passengers.
Q: How far in advance should I book?
A: Northwest Passage expeditions have limited capacity and are in high demand. Booking 12–18 months in advance is recommended for the best cabin selection.
Q: Are we travelling as a group?
A: Guests who book airfare through Craig Travel (including group flights from Toronto and select gateways) travel together to Reykjavik. Land-only guests meet the group in Reykjavik. Airport transfers can be arranged for an additional cost.
Solo Travellers
Q: I’m a solo traveller. How can I avoid paying a single supplement?
A: Craig Travel offers the CT Match program, which pairs solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender who is also looking to share a room. This is a great way to avoid paying the single supplement and to meet a fellow traveller for your journey. While we do our best to accommodate requests, availability may be limited, so it’s recommended to sign up early.
Travel Insurance
Q: Is travel insurance required?
A: Yes. Emergency medical insurance is mandatory. Travel interruption insurance is highly recommended. Craig Travel offers comprehensive coverage options — contact us for a free quote.
Payments and Discounts
Q: Can the final payment be made by e-transfer and still receive the cheque discount?
A: Yes. The final payment can be made by e-transfer and you will receive the same discount that applies to cheque payments. The full amount must be transferred. If your bank has daily e-transfer limits (for example, $2,500 per day), you will need to start making payments several days before the final payment date to ensure the last transfer covers the remaining balance in full. Final payment can also be made by credit card (Visa or Mastercard) or bank transfer, but these methods do not qualify for the final payment discount.
