Frequently Asked Questions: Colombia River Cruise

Colombia River Cruise

Rhythms & Waterways of Colombia
Departure Date: January 17, 2027

Below are answers to some of the most common questions about the Colombia River Cruise.

Activity Level & Accessibility

Q: I can’t walk long distances. Is this trip suitable for me?
A: The tour is labelled as slightly challenging. Some excursions involve walking over uneven surfaces or cobblestones, and some ship and shore access may have steep steps. Guests should be able to walk about a kilometre. Most days offer 2–3 excursion options at different activity levels, so you can choose what suits you best.

Q: How accessible is this itinerary for a walker with quite limited mobility?
A: This itinerary may be challenging for guests with limited mobility. Some of the docks can be difficult to navigate, and there are no elevators on board, which means stairs are unavoidable.

It’s important to keep in mind that you may need to skip certain sightseeing activities depending on accessibility at each stop. We also strongly recommend travelling with an able-bodied companion who can assist you as needed throughout the journey.

Q: Are bicycles available on the cruise?
A: No—bicycles are not available on this Colombia journey. While AmaWaterways does offer complimentary bikes and guided cycling excursions on many of its European cruises, these are designed for destinations with established cycling infrastructure.

In Colombia, the Magdalena River itineraries focus on cultural visits, nature, and guided excursions such as walking tours and wildlife experiences instead, as the region is not considered cycle-friendly and does not support safe or practical biking excursions.

Q: Will there be time in Bogota to visit the gold museum?
A: There will be some time to walk around La Candelaria in the afternoon on arrival, and we plan to visit the Botero Museum if time allows. The Gold Museum may also be possible during free time, though this cannot be guaranteed.

On the second day in Bogotá, after the visit to the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá (approx. 5 hours), there may be additional time to explore. While we cannot promise a visit, your Journey Leader will assist with logistics if it is possible.

Packing & Dress Code

Q: What is the dress code on the cruise?
A: There is no formal dress code—casual attire is fine. A packing guide will be sent with final documents.

Onboard Services & Amenities

Q: Can dietary restrictions be accommodated on board?
A: AmaWaterways will do its best to accommodate most dietary needs and food allergies when advised in advance. While gluten-free, vegetarian, and other special requests can be arranged, kosher meals cannot be provided due to onboard preparation limitations. Please note that cross-contamination cannot be completely avoided.

After booking, inform your Craig Travel Sales Specialist of any dietary requirements so we can coordinate with AmaWaterways and the Journey Leaders in advance.

Q: Is there Wi-Fi available on the cruise?
A: Yes, Wi-Fi is free throughout the ship.

Q: Are alcoholic drinks included?
A: Yes, unlimited beverages are included. You may also bring anything on board as well.

Flights, Travel & Cruise Logistics

Q: If we opt for the group flights when we book, do you guarantee that couples can be seated together on the flight?
A: If you choose to include the group flight to and from Colombia, it comes with the advantage of flexibility that is built into group airfare. However, this type of booking does not allow us to guarantee that couples will be seated together, as seat assignments are controlled by the airline.

If sitting together is a priority, the best option is to book your flights independently rather than as part of the group. This typically gives you more control over seat selection, but it also means a different airfare structure and fewer of the flexibility benefits that come with group bookings.

Q: On what side of the boat is the dock tie-up?
A: While it is common practice on many rivers for ships to moor facing upstream to support navigation, docking positions can still change based on instructions from local river authorities.

Group & Booking Information

Q: What is the typical group size for a Craig Travel cruise?
A: We aim for 25 Craig Travel guests. The ship may carry up to 160 passengers.

Q: Will we be travelling as a group?
A: Guests booking through Craig Travel fly together to Colombia. Land-only guests meet the group there. Airport transfers can be arranged for a fee.

Solo Travellers

Q: I am travelling alone. How can I avoid paying a single supplement?
A: For this departure, single cabins are only available in upgraded categories and are limited. Please call to check availability and pricing. To avoid the single supplement, consider our CT Match program, which pairs solo travellers of the same gender to share a cabin.

Q: What are the single supplement costs?
A: The single supplement starts at C$3,545 per person. There are limited single cabins offered; please call to check availability.

Travel Insurance

Q: Is travel insurance required for this cruise?
A: Travel insurance is not required but highly recommended. Contact sales [at] craigtravel.com for a free quote.

Payments and Discounts

Q: Can the final payment be made by e-transfer and still receive the cheque discount?
A: Yes. The final payment can be made by e-transfer and you will receive the same discount that applies to cheque payments. The full amount must be transferred. If your bank has daily e-transfer limits (for example, $2,500 per day), you will need to start making payments several days before the final payment date to ensure the last transfer covers the remaining balance in full. Final payment can also be made by credit card (Visa or Mastercard) or bank transfer, but these methods do not qualify for the final payment discount.

Q: I am a past AMA cruiser. Am I able to use the privilege rewards program?
A: Typically, yes, but the benefits are usually different on group departures due to the type of contract. Please let our sales specialist know when you place the booking, and they will do their best to apply as many rewards as possible.
