Discover the Magic of Barging: Europe's Most Relaxing Getaway

December 18, 2025 by Craig Travel

Dreaming of a holiday that combines luxury, serenity, and authentic discovery? When most people hear the word "barge," they picture an industrial vessel pushing cargo down a busy river – but barge cruising couldn’t be more different. Also known as hotel barge cruising, this is your perfect escape into slow, thoughtful travel. At Craig Travel, we love introducing travellers to this unique way of exploring Europe's quieter canals and waterways.

What is Barging?

These barges are small, converted leisure vessels designed for relaxed travel along historic canals and rivers, moving at a gentle pace – often slower than walking speed, around 5-6 km per hour. With typically 6-20 guests or fewer, barging offers an intimate, unhurried experience far removed from large cruise ships. Most cruises last 6-7 nights and are fully inclusive, with gourmet meals, fine wines, and daily excursions.

Why Choose Barging?

  • Intimate & Relaxed: Small groups mean exceptional service (often 1 crew per 2 guests) and a cosy, welcoming atmosphere – like a home away from home.

  • Slow Travel at Its Best: Cruise by day, moor at night. Watch vineyards and castles glide past from the sundeck, or hop off for gentle country walks and bike rides along towpaths.

  • Culinary Heaven: An onboard chef prepares fresh regional dishes, often paired with premium local wines and enjoyed around a shared table – the kind of meals where conversation lingers long after dessert.

Exclusive Experiences: Personal and immersive – private tastings with local producers, château visits, hidden gems, and time connecting with the people who live along these waterways, all while avoiding crowds.

  • Flexible Options: Book a cabin or charter the whole barge for families, friends, or themed trips (wine, golf, biking), with customizable itineraries, curated excursions, and personalized onboard experiences.

Barging isn't about ticking boxes; it's sustainable, stress-free travel on calm waters that feel genuine - ideal for multi-generational groups or couples seeking tranquility.
